Updated Social Media Sizes for 2025: Posts, Stories, Reels, and Ads
Social media sizes are always on the move. Just when you think you’ve got them down, a new platform pops up with its own unique specs and aspect ratios to learn.
To make things trickier, official media size guidelines can be hard to find, or even nonexistent. So why all the mystery?
The truth is, these platforms update their image standards so frequently that maintaining official documentation just isn’t a priority. Keeping up is left to the rest of us.
That’s where we come in. We’ve done the research and compiled the most current media dimensions across all the major platforms into one easy-to-use guide, so you don’t have to. Without further adieu, here’s a quick rundown of the up-to-date media sizes as of June 2025 for platforms like Meta (Facebook, Instagram, and Threads), LinkedIn, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Bluesky.

Below is a quick, no detail list of recommendations for the applications, mostly by the applications themselves. We usually try for double any recommended size when designing just in case anything changes. At least then your design will always be large enough to resave and resize in whatever program you use.

Meta: Instagram Detailed Media Sizes
Instagram supports various aspect ratios, square, vertical, and horizontal, but how they show up depends on where they’re viewed. While your followers may see the full image in their feed, your profile grid enforces a tighter, vertical crop. To keep things looking cohesive, design with the grid in mind, and stick to the recommended sizes.
Instagram Profile Size
Profile Media Size:
- Square: 320 x 320 px
Instagram displays profile at 110 × 100 pixels, but stores them at a higher resolution, 320 × 320 pixels. To keep your profile looking sharp, upload a file that’s at least that size (we usually try for double). Although the format is a square, the media is shown as a circle on your profile, so be sure to keep key elements (like faces or logos) centered with enough room around them to avoid them getting cropped.
Instagram Post Sizes
Feed Media Sizes:
- Landscape: 1080 x 566 px
- Vertical: 1080 x 1350 px
- Square: 1080 x 1080 px
- Carousel: 1080 x 1350 px
Media Aspect Ratios:
- Feed: Anywhere between 1.91:1 and 4:5
- Profile Grid: 3:4
A media size of 1080 pixels wide and a height between 566 and 1350 pixels is recommended by Meta. Remember, all images resized and show at 1012 x 1350 px on the profile grid.
We design our regular Instagram posts in a vertical format at 2160 x 2882 px (which works out to be a 3:4 ratio and if you do the math is double 1080 x 1440 pixels.)
Instagram Story Size
Story Media Size:
- 1080 x 1920 px
Media Aspect Ratio:
- 9:16
The “safe area” is 1080 x 1420 pixels leaving around 250 pixels at the top and bottom. Make sure to keep important content within that area of the frame.
Instagram Reels Size
Reels Media Size:
- Feed: 1080 x 1920 px
Media Aspect Ratios:
- Feed 9:16
- Profile Grid: 3:4
Remember, reels are resized and shown at 1080 x 1440 pixels.
Instagram Post Ads Sizes
Post Ad Media Sizes:
- Landscape: 1080 x 566 px
- Vertical: 1080 x 1350 px
- Square: 1440 x 1440 px
Media Aspect Ratios:
- Anywhere between 1.91:1 and 4:5
A minimum width of 500 pixels and a minimum height of 400 pixels is recommended.
Instagram Story & Reels Ads Size
Story and Reels Ad Media Size:
- 1440 x 2560 px
Media Aspect Ratio:
- 9:16
To ensure important elements like text or logos aren’t hidden by Instagram’s overlays, it’s best to keep them away from the very top and bottom of your media. Specifically for stories, Meta recommends leaving generous margins at both ends, roughly 14% at the top and 20% at the bottom. For reels, Meta recommends roughly 14% at the top and 35% at the bottom, and 6% on the sides, so everything remains visible across different device displays.
Consider These Tips
- For the best quality on Instagram, upload images that are 1080 pixels wide.
- Images larger than 1080 pixels will be resized down to 1080 pixels by Instagram.
- Photos with a resolution below 320 pixels will be scaled up to 320 pixels by the platform.
- Images between 320 and 1080 pixels wide will keep their original resolution if their aspect ratio falls between 1.91:1 and 4:5 (height between 566 and 1350 pixels for a 1080 pixel width).
- Images uploaded with unsupported aspect ratios will be automatically cropped to fit one of Instagram’s supported ratios.
- Keep in mind that all photos on your profile grid display in a vertical-crop profile grid image size.
Meta: Facebook Detailed Media Sizes
Facebook can be challenging when it comes to image dimensions, as they vary depending on whether someone is browsing on a desktop or a mobile device and people often switch between both. (It’s also worth noting that Facebook ranks among the top three most visited websites globally.) Don’t worry, we’ve accounted for both formats.
Facebook Profile Size
Profile Media Sizes:
- Desktop: 176 x 176 px
- Mobile: 196 x 196 px
The format is a square but the media is shown as a circle on your profile, so be sure to keep key elements (like faces or logos) centered with enough room around them to avoid them getting cropped.
Facebook Cover Size

- Desktop: 820 x 312 px
- Mobile: 640 x 360 px
The minimum size should be 400 x 150 pixels and an ideal file size should be less than 100KB.
Facebook Timeline & Post Size

Consider These Tips
- To avoid any compression or distortion, upload a PNG file. It is said a JPG works as well, but in our experience they tend to lose quality.
- File size should not exceed 30MB.
- Use the recommended pixel sizes for the fastest load times. Although we recommend building them double the size, you can always save them out at recommended dimensions.
- Don’t drag to reposition things like cover photos once you’ve uploaded them.
Meta: Threads Detailed Media Sizes

Threads Post Size
Post Media Size:

Media Aspect Ratios:
- Acceptable: 0.01:1 to 10:1
- Native: 3:4
Threads recommended minimum width is 320 pixels and maximum is 1440 pixels. File sizes should be no larger than 8MB. For the record, if you are creating a carousel post, they can include up to 20 images.
LinkedIn Detailed Media Sizes

- Profile: 400 x 400 px
- Cover: 1584 x 396 px
Media Aspect Ratios:
- Profile: 1:1
- Cover: 4:1
The profile format is a square but the media is shown as a circle on your personal page, so be sure to keep key elements (like faces or logos) centered with enough room around them to avoid them getting cropped. For both the profile and cover, file size should not exceed 8MB and cover photos are cropped differently on mobile and desktop so make sure to check on things before finalizing.
LinkedIn Company Sizes
Media Sizes:
- Logo: 400 x 400 px

Carousel images have a maximum file size of 10MB and the rest have a maximum size of 5MB. Carousels can include 2 to 10 images.
TikTok Detailed Media Sizes
TikTok Profile Size

The format is a square but the media is shown as a circle on your profile, so be sure to keep key elements (like faces or logos) centered with enough room around them to avoid them getting cropped. It would be a good idea to upload an image larger than 20 pixels but still keeping the ratio.
TikTok Video Size
Media Size:
- 1080 x 1920 px
Media Aspect Ratio:
- 9:16
You can post videos with other ratios, but TikTok will add black to fill in the top and bottom areas of the videos so they meet the 9:16 aspect ratio.
TikTok General Ads Size
General Ad Media Sizes:
- Vertical (recommended): 540 x 960 px minimum
- Landscape: 960 x 540 px minimum
- Square: 640 x 640 px minimum
- Carousel: 1200 x 628 px or 640 x 640 px or 720 x 1280 px.
- Profile photo for ads: 98 x 98 px
Media Aspect Ratios:
- Vertical: 9:16
- Landscape: 16:9
- Square: 1:1

Carousels can include 2 to 35 images and maximum file size is 100KB. Maximum file size for profile images for ads is 50KB
X (formerly Twitter) Detailed Media Sizes

The format is a square but the media is shown as a circle on your profile, so be sure to keep key elements (like faces or logos) centered with enough room around them to avoid them getting cropped. It would be a good idea to upload an image larger than 400 pixels but still keeping the ratio.
X Cover Size

- 1500 x 500 px
Cover images change what you can see of the media depending on the monitor and browser being used. Be aware, 60 pixels can be cropped from the top and bottom so it would be best to leave important information out of this area.
X Post Sizes
